The Central Region OPP is warning drivers about the increased risk of wildlife-related vehicle collisions as we head into the fall months. Over 6,000 incidents were reported between 2021 and 2023, with most occurring from October to December, primarily involving deer.
To enhance safety, the OPP advises drivers to reduce speed, especially at dawn and dusk, and to be cautious in areas marked for high wildlife activity. Using high beams wisely at night and watching for reflections in headlights can help spot animals on the road.
Police say, in case of a potential collision, drivers should brake firmly rather than swerve.
If you see wildlife near the road, slow down, be prepared to stop, and use your horn to alert the animal and other drivers.
