Muskoka Rd 38 through Wahta First Nation to be renamed
The District of Muskoka, Wahta Mohawks First Nation, and the Township of Muskoka Lakes are working on a collaborative approach to enrich the name of Muskoka Road 38, which connects communities and passes through Wahta Mohawk Territory.
Wahta Mohawks First Nation will propose three names for Muskoka Road 38 next year. A tri-council committee will recommend a new name to Muskoka District Council for formal resolution.
Muskoka Area Indigenous Leadership Table felt renaming Muskoka Road 38 would help non-Indigenous residents understand Wahta Mohawk history, language, and culture.
The pilot project is the District's first road renaming project and will help inform future renaming efforts.
The partnership expects this renaming effort to increase community awareness of Wahta Mohawk culture, language, and history, community commitment to Truth and Reconciliation, diversity, equity, inclusion, and anti-racism, and Indigenous-municipal relations.
