Ironman 70.3 Returns To Huntsville In July
After a lengthy discussion, some dissenting opinions, and adjustments to the original proposal, the Ironman 70.3 Muskoka Triathlon will be returning on July 15, 2022.
General Committee members voted 5-3 in favour of a resolution that included reducing the contract renewal from three years to one, with a review to take place after the 2022 event.
The contract includes removing the $25,000 cash outlay commitment of the previous agreement, while maintaining the Town’s in-kind contributions valued at over $14,000. The in-kind value includes use of the Canada Summit Centre floor space for four days.
One of the sticking points for a couple of councillors was the time of year it was being held.
Councillor Tim Withey wonders why the event couldn’t be held before the July 1st long weekend. He says, “I’m struggling with the date . . . I’ve heard from a lot of businesses that aren’t happy about it (being in July).”
Councillor Dan Armour adds, “My constituents feel the Ironman has run its course, especially in July.”
Nick Stoehr from Trisport Event Inc., the race organizers, indicates this date was selected due to an already full race calendar, and building excitement by promoting the Muskoka race in lead-up events.
Councillor Nancy Alcock was very supportive. She says, “It’s inspirational for a lot of people. I was a volunteer for a couple of years, and it was a wonderful feeling being part of something like this.”
Still to be confirmed is the exact race route for the 2022 event.
